Ideogram

Ideogram was founded in Toronto in late 2022 by former Google Brain senior research scientist Mohammad Norouzi alongside William Chan, Chitwan Saharia, and Jonathan Ho — all four authors of the Imagen paper. It publicly launched on August 22, 2023. Its core research mission is to solve the weakest link of text-to-image models: rendering English text and numbers accurately inside an image, so that posters, menus, signage, and packaging designs no longer have to be discarded because of misspelled or distorted letters.

Core capabilities center on its proprietary model line: 0.1 through 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and the current 4.0 / 4.0 Balanced release. The latest 4.0 hits roughly 90% in-image text accuracy — well ahead of competing text-to-image systems (Midjourney and others sit around 30%) — while preserving photorealistic and artistic styles. Ideogram Editor supports inpainting and outpainting for local edits, Remix to extend from an uploaded image, and Describe for reverse-generating a prompt; every model natively supports Magic Prompt auto-expansion, Negative Prompt, Style Reference, and Color Palette inputs.

Use cases include posters and billboards with readable English taglines, restaurant menus and packaging design, e-commerce detail-page imagery, logo concept design, social-media cards, and T-shirt / merchandise prints with correct English copy. Credit system: the free tier gives 10 slow credits per week; Plus starts at $15 per month (billed annually) with 1,000 priority credits; Pro at $42 per month adds 3,500 credits and 32 concurrent generations; pay-as-you-go top-ups never expire. Web and API access (with batch and webhook support) are both available. Funding: a $16.5M seed round led by a16z and Index Ventures, with total funding over $80M since 2024.
